I Am Here

When the 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch in September of last year I was very remiss about informing you of my status. You may or may not be aware that Christchurch experienced a second earthquake (magnitude 6.3; depth 5 km and centred 10 km southeast of Christchurch) at 12.51 PM (local time) today.

To clarify, I reside in Auckland, which is near the top of the North Island; Christchurch is approximately halfway down the east coast of the South Island (but slightly inland). I have distant family and a good friend (cyphomandra) in Christchurch - all are well. However, the effects of this earthquake appear far more catastrophic and devastating than the first, with reports of multiple fatalities and collapsed buildings, including the Christchurch Cathedral.

My thoughts are with the people of Christchurch.

    Mariana - thank you :)

Heidenkind - many thanks! It's...surreal. It looks like a scene you would see in another country, not here.

  5. I'm glad you are OK, Orannia. I have family friends in Christchurch, but fortunately because it's the school holidays they had gone on a 2 day trip to the south coast and weren't in Christchurch when the earthquake struck. At the moment though they don't know whether their house is still standing :(.

How awful for those who did get caught up in it and my thoughts are for those people today, and their loved ones.

  6. I'm so glad you and your loved ones are okay. My heart goes out to everyone in Christchurch and their circle of loved ones.

Jenre, I'm glad to hear your family friends were away from town during the time of the earthquake. It will be absolutely devastating if their house has been destroyed, but at least they are okay.
