Avatar...

Approximately 2 years ago (have I been blogging that long?) I was dithering over what avatar (profile icon) to chose to represent me online. In the end I picked the leopard (perhaps because at the time I was head over heels in love with Nalini Singh's leopard Changelings [who isn't?]).

The thing is, the more I think about it, the more I...feel (which come to think of it is rather weird for me :) that the leopard doesn't represent me any more. It's who I was, not who I am. The problem is, I (still) don't know who I am, and what would best represent me. And I'm still not sure what the rules are regarding avatars, or if there are indeed rules covering what can and cannot be used.

So, how did you chose your avatar? (I'm hoping from your responses I can point myself in the right direction :)

  1. There are a lot of icon makers over on Livejournal who frequently make icons available for anyone to use so long as credit is given. That's where I've got most of mine. The dalek one I'm using now came that way.

  2. I have two icons - this one, which shows up when I comment on blogger blogs and at the top of my blog sidebar. And one that shows up on GRs, LJ, and anyplace that uses Gravatar, which is Mayhem's eye (sideways, because she was lying on her side when I took the picture).

The one I'm using here was created at some avatar site YEARS ago, back when I just had Chaos. It started out with the larger cat. When I got Mayhem, one of my blog friends tweeked it so she would be on it, too! And the avatar actually kinda looks like me.

  3. I don't think that there are rules, other than don't violate copyright.

Mine, as you know, is the lovely Rita Hayworth, and the reason I chose it is because I'm Mexican and she's highly recognizable as a Hollywood star of Mexican extraction. Shallow, right? *grin* However, she's been my avatar for almost six years now, so I think she's staying.

    Not very helpful, though. (sorry)

  4. People change their icons all the time. I don't because I'm lazy, of course... :) I chose mine because the title of my blog is based off of Moulin Rouge.

  5. I've worried about the same thing, orannia. And, I've only had 2 avatars since I started commenting/blogging.

Hope you find something that feels like "you". :-)

  6. When I first started blogging, my avatar was a picture of She-Ra, Princess of Power. LOL I had a personal blog by a similar title so it fit. Then I would change it from time to time but now I settled on Max, wearing my glasses in front of my wall of books. I think it suits me b/c I love my dog so much and I love books. So basically whatever you want. :P

  7. I don't remember what mine is... I change mine constantly. I usually go for things that remind me of something happy or things to do with my daughter's name (Liliana, but we call her Lili). Mostly they are pictures of flowers, beautiful nature scenes or butterflies.

I sometimes try to use my picture; just because it's nice to see what others look like, so why not begin with my own. My initials are MEAL, so food works as well :)

  8. Kerry - oh, that sounds just like what I'm looking for. (I love your dalek icon!) Could you please send the link my way?

Chris - I love your two avatars. They are both...so you :) And May peaking over the edge in this one - so cute!

azteclady - definitely helpful, especially WRT the copyright. I must remember that! And Rita is...gorgeous! So she suits you just fine :)

  9. heidenkind - I love your icon. I am embarrassed to admit that I didn't realize the title of your blog and your icon were linked though *blushes*

Renee - thank you! It's actually rather tricky trying to find something...and then working out if it fits. I can't think of anything, so thought I'd look and lots and see what worked :)

ames - thank you :) And Max is sooo cute!

Mariana - that's fascinating, what you chose and why. I love it!

  10. Aw, thanks. :)

I also kinda think of avatars as your own personal branding, part of establishing your online identity.

  11. I don't think there are rules. I think that it's just something you love whether it represents who you are or what you love. I don't think there's anything wrong with changing your avatar. When I went on boards a lot (a few years ago) I would change my avatar constantly. I've stuck with the current one since I started blogging though - just so people see it and can say "oh, it's that Tracy." I don't think you'll have that problem as your name isn't as common as mine. :)

Why did I choose my avatar? Well, I liked it. lol Brilliant, I know. The woman has red hair, like I do, and when you see the picture enlarged you can see that there are papers falling from her hands and blowing in the wind. I kind of liked that it reminded me of the pages of a book. :)

  12. Chris - you're very welcome :) And that's it exactly - your avatar is your personal branding, an image that says...'you' :) Hmmm. I have a lot of work to do!

I think that it's just something you love whether it represents who you are or what you love.

Tracy - I like that way of looking at things :) And now I'm going to go and look at your avatar enlarged as your description of it sounds amazing!
